“We are what they grow beyond”

A Holistic Approach

Everything you need is already within.

I work with clients for a minimum of three month increments. During the first 3 months, we’ll talk weekly. Then as our relationship progresses we can shift to twice a month to keep our momentum.

Our relationship starts with a complementary coaching call to see if we’re a “good fit” for each other. You can schedule that here. Then if we both decide to move forward, we’ll customize a coaching package right for you.

Coaching Philosophy

“Whoever or Whatever is in front of you is your teacher”.

– The School of Practical Philosophy

Believe it or not, it is my experience that the answers you seek are already within. It is my job as your coach is to draw out of you what already exists. My job is to ask the right questions and challenge you to use your strengths while managing your weaknesses.

My approach is equal parts business coaching, performance coaching and life coaching. Ultimately, I’m interested in applying the concepts of sports psychology and positive psychology techniques To help you achieve your goals and find meaning in the day today..especially when life is not cooperating with their desires.

Drawing from my experience as a business owner, actor, presenter, teacher and athlete, I’m interested in incorporating the best practices from each discipline and modifying those practices to meet individual needs for peak performance in both business and life. Through a series of exercises we’ll examine your physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual makeup while also identifying tools to assist in motivation, well-being, wisdom, mindfulness, self-understanding and self-compassion. We’ll also consider body language, word choice, inflection, point of view and presentation style. In addition, we’ll look at external influences like familial, social, cultural and societal impacts. It sounds deep cause it is. Transformational change only happens at the deepest levels of the human condition.

The work is process oriented and very much like an athlete/coach relationship. My approach is collaborative with help from your “group mind” which includes friends, family, acquaintances, customers and even complete strangers. My job as a coach is to guide your self-discovery. We’ll create new filters from which to view your self, your circumstances. We’ll look to understand how you are perceived in the world and why. Then how to use that perception to your advantage. Once identified, I’ll help you package yourself, your business or ideas by applying YOUR best practices to compete in their industry of choice.

Life is not black or white, it is full of grey. With this in mind, I’m inspired to look at possibility of what could be while also keeping a reasonable perspective. As a jack-of-all-trades who loves to learn, my curiosity in a wide range of subject matter informs my ability to connect the dots, usually in new and unexpected ways, leading to innovation.

I’ve worn many hats as a performer, athlete and businessman and serve my clients by pulling from the best of each. Here’s how each has informed my process:

Creative:

As a member of both Actors Equity Association, AEA and The Screen Actors Guild, SAG, I understand the power of story. Having spent over 20 years studying the art of acting, singing and movement, I have a full understanding of my emotional life, how it works within the body and tools to use to control or convey those emotions. I’ve worked on stage and film in many different styles from comedic to dramatic to scripted to improvisation. I know the difference between authentic performance on stage and on camera and how to bring that out in my clients by using the truth that comes from embracing life experience. I ask my clients to connect to the power of their vulnerability. My reasoning comes from years of experience and observation. Performers willing to share their vulnerability, the good, the bad, the ugly and the beautiful of themselves are the performers that become successful at their craft and eventually sought after. It’s why Bryan Cranston received acclaim for his role in Breaking Bad. He wasn’t afraid to share his vulnerability and was rewarded for his efforts. I’ve seen tremendous results with my clients incorporating the power of vulnerability into their life. Not only that, but Brenee Brown’s Science-based research is further proof of its importance.

Strategist:

My BA in Communications/Public Relations gave me the knowledge and firsthand experience using the skills necessary to compete in today’s business world. I learned copy writing, layout, design, packaging, script writing, television production and both audio and video editing. I used these tools to build a successful business that allowed me to create sales funnels, understand customer relationship management applications, apply my public relations and marketing skills, create products for my target market, write a book and create a complete online course with over 60 hours of video instruction. I have had success in business. And have felt the pain of a business partnership gone awry leading to the businesses dissolution. I’ve had the opportunity to put theory into practice and see firsthand what works, while also learning the hard way that theory doesn’t always translate into real world application.

Coach:

As a competitive swimmer, I learned the power of consistent daily practice, visualizations, and of competing against my personal best. I practiced daily, 6 days a week, for months leading to tappers that won championship races. I’ve false started. I’ve come from behind to win. I’ve given my all and still lost my race and worked as part of a team to win a collegiate championship. Athletics was a place for me to learn my strengths, leadership, the art of setting and achieving goals, patience, faith and most import of all “sisu” the Finnish word for resilience and courage.

These three areas of my life have come together to define my coaching practice, and exemplify how one can merge their interests in order to find flow and eventually “flourish.” This is the overall goal of my practice, to promote well-being in mind, body and spirit because the rigors of starting anything new can be mentally, physically and spiritually exhausting. It takes sisu! Using your new found knowledge, we can create actionable steps to attain you vision. By working backwards from their ultimate vision, we’ll create an action plan of measured steps that are in alignment with their goals, strengths, values, and virtues.

Now that you’ve read about my coaching philosophy – Let Dive in. It’s one thing to read about my philosophy. It’s quite another to experience how it all works together. Let’s talk.

The Big 6

Core Coaching Values

I share this with you so that you can know a little bit more about me my values and my approach to coaching.

Actions speak louder than words. I learned this from my grandfather. Striving for excellence, means you’re putting fourth your best effort. It means your approach to life is focused on accomplishing tasks “the right way” rather than taking short cuts. It means working with your strengths and recognizing weaknesses. Like you, many of the people I work with are “creatives” and “solo-preneurs” who are forced to be a jack-of-all-trades. Often this leads to sloppiness due to spinning too many plates. Excellence does not mean you have to be great at everything, rather it means recognizing excellence both in self and others. Each person is different so my coaching goal is to merge excellence into  your natural flow of work because “how you do anything is how you do everything.” That’s why excellence such an important approach in life.

Collaboration is an important part of the arts, sports and business. From a personal perspective, I work better in a group because I draw inspiration from other people’s ideas and energy. In my collegiate years, I swam better in relays than in individual events because I was counted on to contribute. And as a performer, my preference is working with a partner rather than by myself because I find more joy in the partnership’s realization of an “aha” moment. In my experience, more is accomplished when individuals work together towards a common goal than when they work separately. This is the reason collaboration is important to me. Collaboration is necessary for teamwork.  As part of your team, I’m part collaborator, strategist and life coach.

Sisu is a Finnish word that sums up what I believe to be the best of life and sports. Sisu represents the Finnish ethos of GRIT, guts, fortitude, determination and courage in the face of fear. Sisu can be cultivated in athletes, artists, entrepreneurs and creatives. It’s specially important for careers, like sales,  where rejection is considered part of the process. I’m a quarter Finnish. While I was growing up my father often referenced the word when talking about life. He spoke about times he had witnessed sisu in me like when I false started in a championship heat of 100 Yard Fly. Afterwards he shared with me how proud he was of how I reacted when the chips were down. My next race I swam my best time ever in the 4×100 Freestyle relay. Sisu helps you get back up when life throws the inevitable curve.

Everyone has inner wisdom. Unfortunately, not everyone listens to that wisdom. Connection to this wisdom leads to more Self- Compassion & Self-Forgiveness which in turn leads to more energy and more creativity. Most important in connecting to inner wisdom is letting go of an attachment to outcome…easier said than done, I know. My goal as your coach is to work with you on trusting this wisdom. This can be done by focusing on the process rather than the result while working to achieve your  goal. In my experience, the most important tools of a philosophical life focus on using the wisdom from within. An example of a philosophical tool is “Every person and situation before me is my teacher.” This tool works especially well during troubling times by putting the responsibility back on yourself rather than blaming the situation or another person.

Curiosity is the spark that leads first to interest, learning, creativity, innovation and continued growth. When exploring my inclination for a love of learning, exploration of personal growth, creativity and my fascination with innovation, I drilled down to find the common denominator and realized that each begins with some form of curiosity. From my perspective, our lives are more interesting when we continue to learn from new experiences. It also doesn’t hurt that everyone is interesting if you just take the time to listen and have a conversation. So often we’re so over-scheduled that we forget to take time to be curious about some one else.

Showing someone respect is showing them a form of love. It means that though you may have differing points of view, you will treat them fairly. Respect is having concern and consideration for the welfare of others. Respect is especially important when faced with opposing views. It sets a standard of civility. An example of respect personified was when I learned that someone who my grandfather spoke highly of and made a point to introduce me to at my high school graduation was someone that he had had many disagreements with when they served on the town’s Board of Alderman in the 50’s and 60’s. I would never have guessed that they didn’t get along at one point in their lives. Respect also applies to things like personal property or the community. An example of this is cleaning up after yourself when no on is looking or learning to leave a smaller environmental footprint. Set the example you’d like to see more of in the world…to BE YOUR BEST SELF. It’s something that I will challenge you to do as your coach. I hope you’ll do the same for me.
